Best Banned Films at Easter in Germany - Die besten verbotenen Filme zu Ostern in Deutschland

It's hard to imagine a liberal western democracy banning films on particular holidays, but this is exactly what happens in Germany. While some Brits and EU fans look longingly at Germany as some kind of utopian state where everything is better (some friends of mine have actually said this while holding only a limited knowledge of German *read: Bavarian* culture), the sad truth is that there are some ridiculous religious practices in place. Here's two that take place on Good Friday in the "free" central European country:

Bans on certain films in cinemas.

Bans on dancing and nightclubs.

I might hear you say, "It's only one day of the year!"

But I bet the Church would dislike it if this rule was reversed and on one day of the year all the devotees in their local churches had to watch a select choice of atheist films.

It's a huge overreach of the Church on millions of people who do not believe in Jesus or his unbelievable regenerative skills, especially given the claim that the ban is because Good Friday is a "silent holiday". Pfft.

Some of the films don't even have much to do with being anti-Christian, or showcase or glamorise the paranormal or a theme considered anti-God or anti-religion. Heide, 2001 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280732/) for example? This is on the banned list. It's about a 12 year old girl who is made an orphan when her mother is killed in a storm. Yep, that's right - get made an orphan because your mum dies and you're basically making a pact with the Devil.

5. Halloween, 1978.

One of the most iconic horror films of all time, John Carpenter's slasher is still a great choice for a night in on All Hallows Eve. Michael Myer's torments with his blank canvas dead-eyed stare as he seeks to do as much damage as he possibly can. Half-man, half-supernatural being, the best shot is when Laurie finds all the dead bodies and you can just about make out Myer's mask coming through the dark like a dimly lit candle.

Threat to Easter:

Okay, so it's called Halloween, yet this holiday has its roots in Christianity. Modern day Halloween might be slightly different to the origins sure, but it's mostly a bunch girls and guys dressing up in costumes and scaring each other the best they can. Half the people are just trying to get each other into bed, let alone frighten them, anyway. There's demons and ghosts of course, vampires, zombies, other supernatural beings that are anti-Christian/friends of Satan, but come on, there's also a lot of people trying to be the honourable people as well. - only about 3 are scary (and I'm including the Ruth Baden Ginsburg costume in that, yikes!).

Anti-Christianity message: 2/5 - There's a lot of killing, but Myer's is clearly not a Christian. It's the Christian WASPS who are trying to kill him for crying out loud. Even if you believe MM has been possessed by a demon/the Devil, it's not like the film glamourizes his killing spree. He is very much not the example people want to follow.

4. Mad Max, 1979.

Perhaps a small anomaly in filmmaking norms because this original was actually not the best of the series, but I'll add it here because this is where it all began. Of course, the other films in the series are also included in the list of banned films, but I thought I would add the source film here instead as this is where it all started. In a desert waste land, an ex-policeman tries to take down a motorcycle gang. Simple. By Fury Road, the biker gang has become a tad weirder than the '79 version but it's still all in the same direction.

Anti-Christianity message: 1/5 - How this is on the banned list and other thrillers or violent films aren't is a bit of a mystery. There's always a leader to these gangs who's revered as a God-figure I suppose, in an otherwise Godless apocalypse. There's drugs, knives, guns, prostitution etc - but you could find these themes in thousands of films, so why they're picking on Max and his determination to bring justice to the criminals is a slight ponderance. Probably the least damaging message against Christianity on my list.

3. Monty Python: Life of Brian, 1979.

Now here we have a film that directly takes on Christianity, Jesus, and all that is holy and spins it on its head. If it was made today there would be just as much ballyhoo made about it and there would undoubtedly be calls for it to be cancelled by those on the Left and the Right of the political aisle. Protests, requests for cinemas to be closed down, for the film to be outright banned etc were made and the producers and actors of the film had to do a bloody lot of debating to make sure that didn't happen, some of which are quite entertaining and there are actually good points made by both sides. But at the end of the day, it's art, and despite large sections of it appearing blasphemous, you cannot ban people from ridiculing your ideas. The interpretation of the whole film is also open and although a lot of Christians felt attacked, the writers of the film suggested it's mostly about messiah worship in general. You'll have to watch it to make up your own mind.

Anti-Christianity message: 5/5 - Messiah worship in general or not, I can't help but feel there's a lot of pointers to Christianity, especially the crucifixion scene. Yes, several people were killed in this manner in ancient times, but it has become synonymous with Christianity and Jesus. Having said that, it's an absolute laugh riot (the film, not the crucifixion itself), and forbidding people from laughing at your ideas is not how a free society should conduct itself.

2. Predator, 1987.

IMDB Score - 7.8/10

My Score - 10/10

In reverse of the Mad Max franchise, Predator starts with a gut busting action flick that has been on the wane with every additional sequel or prequel. It gets a perfect 10 from me, mostly because of the nostalgia effect, the simple premise, the dialogue between the commandos, and of course, Arnie and his invisible foe. There's gore, thrills, overthetopness. It's a dream for any 14 year old boy growing up in the 90s.

Anti-Christianity message: 1/5 - As with Mad Max, and others on the full list, I don't quite understand this one. There's no overt attack on Christianity, unless you count the fact that there's an extra-terrestrial being and that some how means there's no God because he only created the creatures on Earth and the film-makers clearly don't believe in God because they've written a film about creatures not developed by the Big Cheese. Anyway, it's a stretch. There's some mild profanity, nudity, they attack a drugs den at some point. Is that what has everyone traumatised? That, or they don't like how the scorpion gets off-ed.

1. Terminator 2, 1991.

Actually, another original that is surpassed by a sequel deal. Although Terminator is on the list as well, number 2 in the series is the absolute pinnacle. If you consider the original as one huge introduction into the premise, the first sequel is the main event. Robot fighting, Linda Hamilton kicking arse, Arnie vs Patrick, the bloody chase in the flood channel, the part where Arnie collects his outfit, the destruction of the Cyberdyne Systems offices, the thumbs up at the end... It's really got everything.

Anti-Christianity message: 1/5 - A very loose implication, similar to Predator or Mad Max. Will the robots produce a Godless society? Are there too many lost generation X-ers in the film who listen to too much Guns n Roses? Who knows. It's a great film, has very little to do with Christians and it's a dishonour to a free society that they would ban such a masterpiece because they think that if people watch it in the cinema on Good Friday, somehow people will go out and cause the end of the world with robots and shotguns and motorbikes or something.

Es ist schwer vorstellbar, dass eine liberale westliche Demokratie Filme an bestimmten Feiertagen verbietet, aber genau das passiert in Deutschland. Während einige Briten und EU-Fans sehnsüchtig auf Deutschland als eine Art utopischen Staat blicken, in dem alles besser ist (einige Freunde von mir haben das tatsächlich gesagt, obwohl sie nur begrenzte Kenntnisse der deutschen *lese: Bayerische* Kultur), die traurige Wahrheit ist, dass es einige lächerliche religiöse Praktiken gibt. Hier sind zwei, die am Karfreitag in dem "freien" mitteleuropäischen Land stattfinden:

Verbot bestimmter Filme in Kinos.

Tanz- und Diskothekenverbote.

Sie werden vielleicht sagen: "Es ist doch nur ein Tag im Jahr!"

Aber ich wette, dass es der Kirche nicht gefallen würde, wenn diese Regel umgekehrt würde und alle Gläubigen in ihren örtlichen Kirchen an einem Tag im Jahr eine Auswahl an atheistischen Filmen sehen müssten.

Das ist ein gewaltiger Übergriff der Kirche auf Millionen von Menschen, die nicht an Jesus oder seine unglaublichen Regenerationsfähigkeiten glauben, vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass das Verbot damit begründet wird, dass Karfreitag ein "stiller Feiertag" ist. Pfft.

Einige der Filme haben nicht einmal viel damit zu tun, antichristlich zu sein, oder sie zeigen oder verherrlichen das Paranormale oder ein Thema, das als gott- oder religionsfeindlich gilt. Heide, 2001 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280732/) zum Beispiel? Das steht auf der Verbotsliste. Es geht um ein 12-jähriges Mädchen, das zum Waisenkind wird, als ihre Mutter bei einem Sturm ums Leben kommt. Ja, das stimmt - wenn man zum Waisenkind wird, weil die Mutter stirbt, geht man im Grunde einen Pakt mit dem Teufel ein.

Einer der kultigsten Horrorfilme aller Zeiten, John Carpenters Slasher ist immer noch eine gute Wahl für eine Nacht zu Allerheiligen. Michael Myer quält mit seinem leeren, leinwandlosen Blick, während er versucht, so viel Schaden wie möglich anzurichten. Halb Mensch, halb übernatürliches Wesen - die beste Szene ist die, in der Laurie all die Leichen findet und man gerade noch Myers Maske erkennen kann, die wie eine schwach leuchtende Kerze durch die Dunkelheit schimmert.

Bedrohung für Ostern:

Okay, es heißt zwar Halloween, aber dieser Feiertag hat seine Wurzeln im Christentum. Das heutige Halloween unterscheidet sich vielleicht ein wenig von den Ursprüngen, aber es ist vor allem ein Haufen Mädchen und Jungs, die sich kostümieren und sich gegenseitig erschrecken, so gut sie können. Die Hälfte der Leute versucht sowieso nur, sich gegenseitig ins Bett zu kriegen, geschweige denn, sie zu erschrecken. Natürlich gibt es Dämonen und Geister, Vampire, Zombies und andere übernatürliche Wesen, die antichristlich sind und mit dem Satan befreundet sind, aber es gibt auch eine Menge Leute, die versuchen, ehrenhaft zu sein. - sind nur etwa 3 davon gruselig (und da schließe ich das Ruth Baden Ginsburg-Kostüm mit ein, huch!).

Antichristliche Botschaft: 2/5 - Es wird viel gemordet, aber Myer's ist eindeutig kein Christ. Es sind die christlichen WASPS, die versuchen, ihn zu töten, um Himmels willen. Selbst wenn man glaubt, dass MM von einem Dämon/Teufel besessen ist, ist es nicht so, dass der Film seinen Amoklauf verherrlicht. Er ist nicht gerade das Beispiel, dem die Leute folgen wollen.

4. Mad Max, 1979.

Vielleicht eine kleine Anomalie in den Filmnormen, denn dieses Original war nicht der beste Film der Reihe, aber ich füge ihn hier hinzu, weil hier alles begann. Natürlich sind auch die anderen Filme der Reihe in der Liste der verbotenen Filme enthalten, aber ich dachte, ich füge stattdessen den Ausgangsfilm hier ein, weil hier alles begann. In einer Wüsteneinöde versucht ein Ex-Polizist, eine Motorradbande zur Strecke zu bringen. Ganz einfach. In Fury Road ist die Biker-Gang noch ein bisschen verrückter geworden als in der Version von '79, aber es geht immer noch in die gleiche Richtung.

Anti-Christentum-Botschaft: 1/5 - Warum dieser Film auf der Verbotsliste steht und andere Thriller oder Gewaltfilme nicht, ist mir ein Rätsel. Es gibt immer einen Anführer dieser Banden, der in einer ansonsten gottlosen Apokalypse wohl als Gottesfigur verehrt wird. Es gibt Drogen, Messer, Waffen, Prostitution usw. - aber diese Themen gibt es in Tausenden von Filmen, weshalb sie sich ausgerechnet Max und seine Entschlossenheit, den Kriminellen Gerechtigkeit widerfahren zu lassen, zum Vorbild nehmen, ist mir ein Rätsel. Wahrscheinlich die am wenigsten schädliche Botschaft gegen das Christentum auf meiner Liste.

3. Monty Python: Das Leben des Brian, 1979.

Hier haben wir einen Film, der sich direkt mit dem Christentum, Jesus und allem, was heilig ist, auseinandersetzt und es auf den Kopf stellt. Wenn er heute gedreht würde, gäbe es genauso viel Aufregung um ihn und es gäbe zweifellos Forderungen nach seiner Absetzung von Seiten der Linken und der Rechten des politischen Spektrums. Es gab Proteste, Forderungen nach Schließung von Kinos, nach einem totalen Verbot des Films usw., und die Produzenten und Schauspieler des Films mussten verdammt viele Debatten führen, um sicherzustellen, dass das nicht passiert, von denen einige recht unterhaltsam sind und beide Seiten tatsächlich gute Argumente vorbringen. Aber letztendlich handelt es sich um Kunst, und auch wenn große Teile des Films blasphemisch erscheinen, kann man den Leuten nicht verbieten, ihre Ideen ins Lächerliche zu ziehen. Die Interpretation des gesamten Films ist ebenfalls offen, und obwohl sich viele Christen angegriffen fühlten, meinten die Autoren des Films, dass es vor allem um Messiasverehrung im Allgemeinen geht. Sie müssen den Film sehen, um sich eine eigene Meinung zu bilden.

Antichristliche Botschaft: 5/5 - Messiasanbetung hin oder her, ich kann mich des Eindrucks nicht erwehren, dass es viele Anspielungen auf das Christentum gibt, insbesondere die Kreuzigungsszene. Ja, in der Antike wurden mehrere Menschen auf diese Weise getötet, aber sie ist zum Synonym für das Christentum und Jesus geworden. Abgesehen davon ist es ein absoluter Lacher (der Film, nicht die Kreuzigung selbst), und den Leuten zu verbieten, über ihre Ideen zu lachen, ist nicht die Art und Weise, wie sich eine freie Gesellschaft verhalten sollte.

2. Predator, 1987.

Im Gegensatz zum Mad Max-Franchise beginnt Predator mit einem atemberaubenden Actionfilm, der mit jeder weiteren Fortsetzung und jedem Prequel an Qualität verliert. Er bekommt von mir eine perfekte 10, vor allem wegen des Nostalgieeffekts, der einfachen Prämisse, der Dialoge zwischen den Kommandos und natürlich wegen Arnie und seinem unsichtbaren Gegner. Es gibt Blutvergießen, Nervenkitzel, Übertreibung. Ein Traum für jeden 14-jährigen Jungen, der in den 90er Jahren aufgewachsen ist.

Anti-Christentum-Botschaft: 1/5 - Wie bei Mad Max und anderen Filmen auf der Liste verstehe ich auch diesen nicht ganz. Es gibt keinen offensichtlichen Angriff auf das Christentum, es sei denn, man zählt die Tatsache, dass es ein außerirdisches Wesen gibt und das irgendwie bedeutet, dass es keinen Gott gibt, weil er nur die Kreaturen auf der Erde erschaffen hat und die Filmemacher offensichtlich nicht an Gott glauben, weil sie einen Film über Kreaturen geschrieben haben, die nicht vom Big Cheese entwickelt wurden. Wie dem auch sei, es ist ein bisschen weit hergeholt. Es gibt ein paar leichte Obszönitäten, Nacktheit, und irgendwann greifen sie eine Drogenhöhle an. Ist es das, was alle traumatisiert hat? Das, oder sie mögen es nicht, wie der Skorpion ausgeschaltet wird.

Eigentlich ein weiteres Original, das von einem Sequel übertroffen wird. Terminator steht zwar auch auf der Liste, aber Nummer 2 der Reihe ist der absolute Höhepunkt. Wenn man das Original als eine riesige Einführung in die Prämisse betrachtet, ist die erste Fortsetzung das Hauptereignis. Roboterkämpfe, Linda Hamilton, die in den Arsch tritt, Arnie gegen Patrick, die blutige Verfolgungsjagd im Flutkanal, der Teil, in dem Arnie sein Outfit einsammelt, die Zerstörung der Büros von Cyberdyne Systems, der Daumen hoch am Ende... Es ist wirklich alles dabei.

Anti-Christentum-Botschaft: 1/5 - Eine sehr lose Andeutung, ähnlich wie bei Predator oder Mad Max. Werden die Roboter eine gottlose Gesellschaft hervorbringen? Gibt es in dem Film zu viele verlorene Generation X-er, die zu viel Guns n Roses hören? Wer weiß. Es ist ein großartiger Film, der sehr wenig mit Christen zu tun hat, und es ist eine Schande für eine freie Gesellschaft, dass man ein solches Meisterwerk verbietet, weil man glaubt, dass die Leute, wenn sie den Film am Karfreitag im Kino sehen, rausgehen und das Ende der Welt mit Robotern, Schrotflinten und Motorrädern herbeiführen werden oder so.
