Top 5 Coke Scenes in Film

Drugs and films. Films and drugs. The two go hand in hand like diabetes and a fast food fanatic.

There is barely a year that goes past without there being an abundance of uppers, downers, speeders, and hallucinogens crammed into the latest Hollywood releases. From early 2000 Wall Street offices to the toilets in a glam club from the 70s, drugs will continue to be a focal point or accessory to a whole host of different genres.

Here are my top 5 coke scenes in films:

5. Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - Scene: various The guy is doing drugs for almost the entire second and third act. There are just too many to mention. Off strippers, off women's chests that are not his wife... But the best is possibly when he uses a drop of the white stuff like Popeye uses spinach to save his best friend from choking. It's a hilarious, bizarre, and frightening look at the world of riches and drugs all in one scene.

4. Goodfellas (1990) - Scene: various Once again there's a lot to choose from this film. Henry's realisation that he can make a killing selling blow on the side - even without Paulie's blessing. His blossoming relationship with Sandy where you're unsure if he really likes her or if he's just using her. Probably the best for me is when he gets busted, Karen dumps the rest of the powder down the toilet and the cops in the booking room rip into him as if he was baking a cake. It's the sudden downer from being up so so high.

3. Pulp Fiction (1994) - Scene: Vincent and Mia's Date

There's so much going on during this scene. Are they flirting? Is Vincent afraid that his boss will kill him if he says the wrong thing? The dancers, the waitresses and waiters. The music. All the while, Uma Thurman is as cool as a cucumber. Before this however, Mia had snorted about half of Colombia. She does it again in the bathroom at the restaurant and I'm left wondering, how is she acting so calm and collected? It doesn't really matter as the whole scene from start to finish - including the needle being stabbed through her heart, is a beautiful melody of dialogue, interaction, and pop culture.

2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) - Scene: Raoul's Stash

They're driving somewhere around Barstow. It's introductory time and not long into the film, when Raoul starts seeing bats all around him and utters the line "We can't stop here, this is bat country." Then precedes to stop to check on his stash. There's a long list of uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... One of these happens to be half a saltshaker full of coke. Of course, the whole scene isn't really about the white stuff per se, but drugs in general, but it makes it onto this list just because of the absolute bizarre nature of the whole scene. It's a hell of an introduction and sets up the audience for the rest of the escapades to come.

1. Boogie Nights (1997) - Scene: Stealing from Alfred Molina

A scene that has so much going on makes it to number one. Jesse's Girl playing from Molina's 'Awesome Mixtapes', the young boy Cosmo - 'He's Chinese', the eccentric nature of Molina himself offering all kinds of drugs under the sun as well as offering to pay full price for a big bag of coke (laundry detergent), the three nervous guests - two of whom don't know why they're really there, the stacked bodyguard, the slow realisation of Eddie (Wahlberg) that he's gone off the deep end, the sudden demand for whatever is in the floor safe - which we never find out what it is!, the gun fight, the escape... It's a truly weird and slow burning scene that reaches a huge climax and it's done so on the ruse of selling a bag of blow. An excellent, excellent scene.

Honourable mentions go to Blow (various), Scarface (various), Timberlake's rant in the Social Network ("Now people are going to live on the internet"), and Flight with Denzel and John Goodman ("Just a little primer.")

And there you have it. My rundown of the best 5 coke scenes in film. There might be some that glamorise, some that criticise, while other's just provide a backdrop for other dealings. What are your favourite scenes involving the white rock?
